The new year has arrived! This also means that there may be some changes to several laws, particularly with regards to the Social Security Administration. Many of the thresholds amounts to qualify for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits have changed. Some of the monetary limits have increased.
So that you have a better idea of what to anticipate this year, it is important that you get to know more about these changes and what the Social Security Administration (SSA) requires.
The threshold for the monetary value of full-time work has increased.
If you are able to work and are earning a certain amount, this limit is called the Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA). If you are earning more than this amount per month, then the SSA deems that you are able to work. The rates have increased from 2015 to 2016.
2015 amounts versus 2016 amounts:
- Non-blind individual: $1, 090 –> $1, 130 per month
- Blind individual: $1, 830 –> $1, 820 per month
The threshold for Trial Work Period (TWP) has increased.
TWP allowed those who are currently receiving SSDI benefits test his or her ability to work. If he or she can performs job duties during TWP for nine months (this does not have to be consecutive) within five years, then TWP benefits will cease. The SSA considers monthly earnings to be at TWP level.
2016 amount versus 2016:
- $780 –> $810
The threshold for Quarter of Coverage has increased.
Every year, a person earns four credits of Social Security Disability insurance benefits if he or she is working in a job that pays toward Social Security and is divided into quarters. You must have earned a certain amount in each quarter to qualify.
2015 amount versus 2016:
- $1, 220 –> $1, 260
To put this into perspective, in 2016, you must have earned at least $5, 040 to obtain all four credits for the year.
