Crush injuries cause substantial damage to the bones and soft tissues compared to other types. While simple fractures heal within a few weeks, a crush injury generally results in comminuted fractures, in which the bone is shattered into three or more pieces. Bones in this state require multiple surgeries to repair with the likelihood of never regaining its complete function.

As far as the soft tissues, significant pressure suffered by the body in a crushing accident may lead to “compartment syndrome.” It is a condition where blood or edema fluid may accumulate in the muscle compartment, causing the compartment pressure to rise and preventing proper blood flow to tissues inside the compartment. Severe cases of compartment syndrome can result in loss of body function, which may require amputation or even death.
